Changing Your Lingerie for Summer

It’s official: we made it out of winter, and sunny summer days are coming! At least to the Northern hemisphere. Those who have an extensive wardrobe know the thrill of finally switching out your wardrobe from winter to summer, and if you’re anything like us, that includes a significant lingerie wardrobe. But what differentiates lingerie for summer from lingerie for winter, or any other season?

Why change out your lingerie with the seasons?

This may seem super extra; who needs lingerie, especially for summer? No one really needs it, but having a few pieces to rotate throughout the year makes all the difference:

  • Different fabrics work better for different temperatures - Believe it or not, silk underwear keeps you warmer in the winter, while cotton is nice and breathable for summer. When you invest in your undergarments, you’re paying for this kind of thoughtfulness, care and consideration that goes into each piece.

  • Not using the same pieces all the time helps them last longer - Just like regular clothes or shoes, the more you wear and wash something, the faster it deteriorates. Quality pieces have a lot of life in them, but especially with lingerie, which needs to be washed more frequently, it’s very important to keep in mind the number of wears and how washing affects them. More pieces you can rotate = longer-lasting lingerie.

  • It’s fun to change it up - Lastly, it can just be fun to change up your daily pieces. Having season-appropriate undergarments means that when fall comes back around, you’ll be excited to wear those pieces again, just like you’re excited about your lingerie for summer.

Light, fun colors

The easiest way to signal the arrival of nicer, sunnier weather is to wear sunnier colors. It’s time to retire the dark, moody colors for now, and set aside the black, the navies and burgundies and perhaps even the reds. It’s time for light pastels and white. This season is seeing a resurgence of not only pastels, but also brighter colors. A yellow bra is the perfect addition to wear the big trendy color of the season, but you can also opt for bright pink or cobalt, or lighter, pastel shades of blue and pink.

Even better if they’re visible through a sheer top, or the straps are visible, or you’re wearing an outfit in a complementary color to the bra and panties. It ties your outfit together and gives it cohesion, making you look polished even with the slightly “undone” details of wearing undergarments.

Sheer, diaphanous fabrics

Fabric is the other big change you can make. Velvet, satin and more structured cups are all gorgeous, but they can take a break while you experiment with something more suited to the summer months. Sheer fabrics like mesh, tulle, or lace are perfect for summer. Cute and flirty is the name of the game. Of course, a breathable choice like cotton is also great for daytime use. A classic t-shirt bra has never let anyone down, has it? And synthetics can get so sweaty. Not very flirty, if you ask us.

Revealing cuts

Of course, if you’re getting a fresh tan, then you’ll want to show it off. So a more revealing lingerie set is in order. A plunge bra is always sexy, but even better when you can show off a tan, some golden bronzer, or even some body glitter, why not? And this summer, the whale tail is back, believe it or not. A peek of lace from under your jeans’ waistband may not be appropriate for a day at the office, but it’s cute and flirty for clubbing or going out on vacation. If not now, when?

Bodysuits with cutouts or straps, cut very high on the leg, or that have a nice amount of cleavage can also be a nice change for the season. With no need for coverage and warmth, you can have a little fun with the design of your bodysuit or slip dress.

Flaunt it

Our favorite thing about summer weather? It allows us to showcase pretty lingerie pieces in a different context! Some of these pieces are too beautiful and too precious to hide, so we love an “underwear as outerwear” moment. You’ve invested money in that cute bra or slip, and damn it, you’re going to wear it and show it off!

Contrary to popular belief, wearing lingerie in public during the daytime doesn’t have to be at all risque. Just a normal outfit, like a white button-up shirt and jeans, can be elevated by a peek of a lacy or satin-y layer underneath, but never in an inappropriate way. You can even get away with wearing your slip as a dress or as a top, if you tuck it into a skirt or a pair of casual shorts. It’s all about the way you play around with your pieces and dress them up or down.

Any excuse is valid when it comes to expanding our wardrobes, and if you can buy cute new clothes for summer, why not lingerie for summer, as well? There are real advantages to seasonal lingerie, including comfort and longevity, but it’s also just fun to have room to play with different styles, fabrics, and colors. If the new season is changing, why shouldn’t your lingerie wardrobe change, as well?
