Black Lingerie Styling Tips

I know what you’re thinking: how hard can it be to style black lingerie, right? Black is the ultimate neutral, and it goes with everything. But, depending on your purpose and your personality, black can feel harsh, or dramatic, or just not quite right. Especially if you want to style it outside the bedroom, you might benefit from some tips.

Black lingerie for nights out

My favorite thing about black lingerie is that it can very easily go from inside-appropriate to outside-appropriate with just a few tweaks. For nights out, lingerie can very well become outerwear. A black, lacy dress or a lace bodysuit paired with a pair of leather pants is a go-to clubwear option, because it’s super easy to put together and it always looks sleek and a little sexy. Generally, you want to keep the rest of the outfit very simple and let the lingerie do the talking.

Another option is to have a black bra peeking out of a dress. Think of a black dress where the cleavage portion displays the tops of your lingerie cups. They work perfectly together to bring just a hint of sexiness. It’s also a great way to make a basic black dress more versatile. Adding black lingerie can instantly make anything sexier.

Black lingerie for everyday outfits

Yes, black lingerie is sexy, but it can also be toned down. Even a black, lacy bra or bodysuit, the ultimate sexy piece, can be made more demure by styling it appropriately. There are three big moves you can make here to make black lace daytime ready:

  • Wear it over another top - since it’s sheer, it leaves a lot of skin exposed, which you don’t always want in the daytime. So, the easiest way to fix that is to layer it over another top that offers some coverage. Let’s say you have a black cotton baby tee on. By putting a lace bodysuit on top, you’re undermining the inherent sexiness of sheer lace, but you’re also creating a layered texture that adds visual interest to your outfit. You still get the pretty effect of the sheer fabric, but you’re keeping it modest with additional coverage. The best of both worlds.
  • Wear it under another top - another option is to simply layer over it. That’s the more straight-forward approach, and probably the easiest solution. Imagine a black lace bra or bodysuit with a white button-down shirt on top. Or a buttoned-up blazer. It also works with a demure cardigan, or a leather jacket - anything that offers coverage.
  • Pair it with neutral or opposite vibe pieces - sometimes the best way to style sensual pieces is to pair them with their opposites: in this case, something oversized, extremely casual, or even masculine. Think a pair of Adam Sandler-esque sweatshorts, or a pair of baggy jeans, an oversized t-shirt that allows a bit of lace to peek through on the side, or a pair of really sporty sneakers. The aim is to take the edge off something that might be too revealing by balancing it out with something very non-sexual.

Black lingerie for the bedroom

This is where you can really have fun and cut loose with black lingerie, because there are no social norms you need to be mindful of. No one else is going to see you except your partner, and you’ll be very appropriately dressed for this particular activity.

Now it’s just a matter of picking out your favorite style. The most comfortable choice for a lot of women is a classic lingerie set; it’s traditionally sexy, it looks fantastic on everyone, and it’s a guaranteed pleaser. But dare to color outside the lines, not with a different color, but with a different style. A black dress can be very enticing on its own and act as a type of lingerie that’s meant to tempt. Or a lacy pair of shorts that are super flattering, but leave little to the imagination. A bodysuit can be an interesting change of pace; more difficult to peel off, but infinitely stimulating, all the same.

Of course, black lingerie doesn’t have to be super exposing. You can opt for something more simple and conservative made out of cotton, or on the contrary, something super luxe, like silk. It can look as basic or as special as you want it to, and it’s up to you in which direction you want to go.

One colour, every mood

Black is by far the most versatile color, not just when it comes to your regular wardrobe, but also your lingerie wardrobe. It can be basic or sexy, sophisticated or straight-forward, and it looks fantastic in any fabric. Sheer, shiny, lacy - there’s plenty to choose from in our black lingerie collection at Gooseberry Intimates. How will you style your favorite black lingerie?
